Job Description:This position will have primary responsibilities for the operation and management of animal care facilities dedicated to the care of rodents for experimental and research purposes. This person will be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of small animal (rodent) laboratory facilities in compliance with all federal Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW/NIH), local and university standards, and shall assure all activities concerning the animal facilities are in accordance with the goals, directives and policies of the University at Albany and OLAW. He/she will provide exceptional customer service and serve as a professional resource to faculty, students and senior management in all areas of research animal use, animal facilities capabilities and resources. The Animal Facilities Manager will be responsible for the independent overall management and operation of the animal care facilities, including recruitment, supervision, and evaluation of facility personnel. Requirements:Minimum Qualifications:• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Animal Science or a related field from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization• Two years related animal laboratory experience• Experience using and handling live animals in a research environment• Experience developing written procedures and ensuring compliance• Excellent written and verbal communication skills• Financial management experience, including budget creation and expenditure monitoring• Ability to work collaboratively with culturally diverse populations in a research environment• Proficiency with Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel• Ability to lift, push, pull, carry equipment and supplies weighing 30 pounds• Minimum one-year supervisory experience• Knowledge of techniques for drug administration, bleeding of animals, euthanasia, and practical knowledge of signs of disease or stress; knowledge of PHS regulatory compliance• Excellent customer service skills• Position requires incumbent have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and be able to travel between job sites.• Must be able to be on-call after hours, holidays and weekendsPreferred Qualification:• Certification as an AALAS technician (ALAS, LAT, or LATG)
