Description of the position: Applications are invited for new tenure-track faculty positions focused on 1) health communication and health education (including social marketing; media advocacy; use of digital media and social networking; and other state-of-the-science areas within the domain of health communication and health education); 2) qualitative and mixed methods research strategies focused on understanding the cultural components of health and illness; and 3) other areas of application of behavioral and social science theory and methods in public health (especially those that focus on the evaluation of behavioral, social and structural interventions in public health).
Faculty recruited for these positions would be expected to teach masters and doctoral courses (both introductory and advanced level, with a preference for those who can teach theory, implementation research, and research methods courses), advise students, serve on departmental and school-wide dissertation committees, and develop/maintain an independent, extramurally funded line of research that complements and extends the Department’s mission.

Qualifications: A Doctoral degree in sociology, psychology, anthropology, communication, health education, public health, medicine, nursing, or related discipline is required. Preference is given to applicants with strong record of research (including substantial and sustained receipt of competitive funding and publication experience) as well as a demonstrated ability to teach in a public health, academic setting. The ability to teach courses in advanced behavioral and social science theory and research methods is highly desirable.
All applicants should have experience in research that focuses on public health issues. We are committed to collaborative, transdisciplinary work that contributes to scholarship and improvements in the health of the public. Experience with community based research, intervention studies, translational research and program evaluation is a strong plus. More senior applicants should demonstrate experience with mentoring junior colleagues, as well as a national or international reputation of scholarly leadership. Commitment to excellence in teaching and the ability to use new technological advances in teaching approaches are highly desirable. All applicants would be expected to demonstrate the ability to work with diverse populations and multicultural perspectives.
Organization Description: Department Overview: The Department of Health, Behavior and Society studies social and behavioral aspects of public health with a special emphasis on the social context that influences behaviors as well as the responses from the public and policy makers. We are especially interested in community and structural interventions and determinants of health; health communication and health education (in clinical, community and societal settings); and behavioral aspects of genetic testing and genetically-influenced conditions. We study behavioral and social aspects of chronic diseases; extant and emerging infections; as well as injury, violence, and disability. We utilize a wide array of social and behavioral science methods, including community-based participatory research, in our work, be it conducted in Baltimore or around the globe.
