The University offers 82 bachelor’s degrees with 66 concentrations, and 70 master’s degrees with 25 concentrations. The University has constructed or renovated several facilities in the last two years, and the campus occupies 19 blocks in downtown San José with 23 academic buildings and seven residence halls. Located 1.5 miles away on 62 acres is the South Campus, which includes the Spartan Stadium and athletics fields.
The Associate Vice President for Graduate and Undergraduate Programs provides campus leadership in all aspects of undergraduate and graduate academic matters, and is responsible for ensuring the integrity of all degree programs. Supervising the work of the Associate Deans for Graduate and Undergraduate Studies, the AVP has primary responsibility for the development and review of the academic curriculum, production of the University Catalog (online), oversight of the General Education program, assessment of student learning, WASC and professional accreditation, academic program review, transfer articulation agreements, and related academic activities that support student success (e.g., degree audit, Early Start, remediation, Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement).
In close coordination with the Provost, Deans, Chairs, the Academic Senate, and the Chancellor’s Office of the California State University, the AVP collaborates on academic planning and policy making at the campus and system level, and collaborates with campus academic and support units to enact enrollment management policies for both undergraduate and graduate programs. In particular, the AVP collaborates with the Joint Enrollment Planning (JEP) group and the Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations (GAPE) group.
The AVP facilitates campus curricular initiatives, serves on curriculum review committees, and undertakes a variety of degree program review and planning activities both on campus and for the CSU system, including oversight of the University Thesis Office. A key activity of the position is assuring compliance with Federal regulations from the U.S. Department of Education, WASC, CA Education Code Title 5, Chancellor’s Office Executive Orders, Presidential Orders, and University Policy. The AVP manages the Academic Scheduling unit and is responsible for the Center for Community Learning and Leadership (service learning and internship processes). The AVP serves as the WASC Accreditation Liaison Officer. The AVP oversees Special Majors, processes student academic petitions, cultivates courses and programs in the University Studies curriculum, and supports new student orientations for frosh, transfers, and graduate students.
This is a position in the CSU – Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President.
