    The Princeton University Library is one of the world’s leading research libraries, serving a diverse community of 5200 undergraduates, 2600 graduate students, 853 faculty, and visiting scholars. Its holdings include more than 7 million printed volumes, 5 million manuscripts, 2 million non-print items, & extensive collections of digital text, data, and images. The Library employs a staff of more than 300 staff members working in a large central library, 9 branches, and 3 storage facilities.

     

    Major Responsibilities

    The Department of Rare Books & Special Collections seeks a service-oriented professional for the arrangement and description of manuscript collections, personal papers, and other materials in the Manuscripts Division.  Personal papers of Latin American literary, cultural, and political figures will constitute a major part of the position’s workload. U.S. historical collections are also significant. The Processing Archivist will participate in committee work. This position supervises student workers assigned to processing tasks & reports to the Special Collections Team Leader.

     

    Essential Qualifications

    Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program with a concentration in archives management, or advanced degree in an allied discipline with experience in archives or special collections; hands-on manuscripts processing experience, including application of standards for manuscript & archival description such as DACS, EAD, & EAC-CPF; familiarity with current developments in processing procedures, along with flexibility and adaptability in the context of conceptual & technological change; ability to compose clear, concise descriptions, as demonstrated in a finding aid/other functional document; strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making skills; demonstrated ability to work in a collegial team environment & to communicate effectively; good reading knowledge of Spanish, with demonstrated application in a library or research setting.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience in training & supervision; technical services use of an integrated library system & a system such as Archivists’ Toolkit; knowledge/awareness of current trends in digitization of rare/unique original research materials, & of metadata formats such as MODS and METS; knowledge of XSLT, XQuery or other scripting languages; advanced degree in Latin American studies, especially literature since the 1950s; good reading knowledge of other Western European languages relevant to the manuscript collections.
