    Qualifications:
    The Department of African American Studies invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor with a specialization in African American Studies, Africana Studies or Black Studies. We seek someone with broad interdisciplinary training within the discipline of African American/Africana/Black Studies. Required qualifications include a doctorate from an accredited institution at the start of the appointment, a commitment to and demonstrated potential for teaching excellence, potential for research productivity, as might be demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications or presentations, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a commitment to program development. Desired qualifications include a terminal degree in African American, Africana, African Diaspora or Black Studies, strong record of teaching excellence, experience in program development, and a record of research productivity as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and presentations. Applicants should demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

    Responsibilities:
    The successful candidate should be prepared to contribute to teaching courses within the department situated in the general education sequence as well as courses in their area(s) or expertise. Other teaching duties include developing new courses appropriate to an interdisciplinary department and course and program assessment. Faculty at SJSU have a four course per semester teaching load with a teaching load reduction during the first two years of service. Other responsibilities include maintaining an active research agenda as well as service and shared governance to rank. The successful candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity—in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation—through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.

    Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
